Queer Family Portraits is a Minneapolis-based studio that offers families of all types a safe and welcoming environment to document the many stages of life. As families grow and evolve, we are here to support the ways everyone deserves to be seen as they are. Queer Family Portraits has stemmed from our sister company, Rivets and Roses which specializes in LGBTQIA+ weddings. We recognized that our community was missing an important aspect of photography services beyond just couples.
Queer Family Portraits is co-founded by Mel Hesse (they/them) and Eliesa Johnson (she/her). Our diverse team is dedicated to working with anyone who identifies or allies with the LGBTQIA+ community. We believe every family member should feel valued and seen for who they are today.
Inclusive Pricing
Our sessions are based on inclusive packages, meaning one price includes everything! Whether you’re booking your child’s senior photos or a family session, the pricing is the same and built upon an hourly rate.
All sessions include high resolution digital files of your final edit with the option to purchase additional professional prints and products.
Our add on options are designed to easily upgrade and customize your desired session.

Meet our Family
When we say we are family, we mean it! Our dedicated photographers at Queer Family Portraits have been a part of our studio for several years, largely serving LGBTQIA+ couples with their wedding work over at our sister company, Rivets and Roses. Just as families grow and evolve, we as a business have, too! This evolution led to the creation of Queer Family Portraits - affirming family photography that recognizes, celebrates, and validates the diversity of families.
We offer a variety of photographers with different artistic styles and backgrounds to support the community. We encourage you to browse our artist portfolios and book a session with an artist whose work you connect with the most.

As a part of Queer Family Portraits, it’s our mission to give back to the community and support families. We are proud to support the work of RECLAIM!
RECLAIM's mission is to increase access to mental health care for queer and trans youth so they may reclaim their lives from oppression in all its forms. The organization serves youth ages 12-25 and their families by providing individual, couples, family, and group therapy. They specialize in assisting youth with gender identity and sexual orientation exploration, in addition to treating other mental health concerns impacting youth and young adults such as anxiety, depression, and pervasive trauma. Beyond the therapy work, RECLAIM engages in community events and offers training and consultation services to help partners improve their ability to work with queer and trans folks.
